Why do you have to wait 3 years before having a colonoscopy?

I recently had a colonoscopy and there was a small benign polyp on my colon. They told me that I need to have a colonoscopy in three years. After that, I need to have a colonoscopy every three years. Why not 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years?
