What type of surgery is done for Fistula of the colon?
I just had a colonoscopy which the doctor discovered I had a hole which he called a Fistula, that went on & on. So now have to have acouple of tests, then surgery but haven’t went to the surgeon yet. Guess after the tests are done & results come back, will then see the surgeon. But am wondering what type of surgery is done for this. I have searched the internet & can’t find anything on this except to certain conditions that I don’t have.

Sometimes a fistula will heal with bowel rest. You would be fed totally by special IVs called TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) for a period of weeks, usually. But sometimes it is necessary to remove the portion of the colon around the fistula, this is called a partial (or sub total) colectomy. It is unusual, but not impossible, for a temporary colostomy to be required. They are usually in place for 6 weeks to 3 months.
This type of surgery, called colon resection
The problem can be corrected with surgery to remove the fistula and the affected part of the colon
hope this helps^_^
There are different types of fistulas and the repair depends on the type. In most cases you would have a colon resection. This is like taking a hose (your intestine) and cutting a section out and putting the two ends back together. Sometimes when this is done, you could have a temporary (less than six months) colostomy placed to rest the far end of the bowel and let it heal. The surgery isnt awful. I had a resection after a car accident (seat belt tore my colon).
