Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Sometimes called spastic or nervous colon, it’s the most common disorder among people with gastrointestinal problem. People with IBS have a difficult
time staying regular and often complain of pain somewhere in the digestive system after eating. The good news is that IBS is not dangerous.
The natural remedy below may help prevent or relieve IBS, according to some health professionals.
Ayurveda:
Triphala, a gentle but powerful internal cleanser made from the Indian fruits amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki, is the main Ayurvedic treatment for digestive and eliminative problem, says David Frawley, O.M.D., director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Some health food stores sell triphala capsules or tablets; you can also purchase them in Indian pharmacies. Dr. Frawley. "people who take triphala don’t develop a laxative dependency.
In fact, triphala helps restore the tone of the large intestine."
Food Therapy:
"If you eat a lot of cooked protein, hydrogenated oils, concentrated sugars or other foods that are hard to digest, your colon can react – and not nicely," says Dr. Klaper. He advises that those with IBS avoid meats, dairy products, greasy snack foods, spicy fare and sweets. At first sign of a flare-up and during the time the colon is inflamed, build your meal around easy-to-digest foods such as rice, sweet potatoes, well-steamed green and yellow vegetables and bananas, he suggests.
Then after the bowel inflammation subsides, he says, you can start adding new foods to your diet, one at a time every 48 hours.
This way, he explains, you can watch for any ill effects of the new foods.
For homeopathic treatment I have no clue. For alternative treatments try the following
1) A good probiotic (dr, ohiras is the best brand but it is pricey)
2) Cut down big time on dairy products
3) Kombucha tea
There is no homeopathic treatment that has been shown to be effective in IBS, and no reason to expect any homeopathic treatment would be effective.
IBS is a difficult condition ( it is not a disease) to treat…and its symptoms can be related to emotional turmoil.
They are all as good as the other. So take anything you like. It won’t make any difference of course, but you are not limited by the choice of fancy name they put on the little bottles.
OK lets’ just get this out of the way. Homoeopathy does not work, therefore it is incorrect to describe it as treatment. It is simply water or sugar pills.
IBS is an umbrella term for a collection of symptoms. Management really depends on what symptoms you have. If you are looking for a non drug option try increasing fibre in your diet; 50% of people find this helps, but the other 50% say it makes it worse. It’s worth a try.
I’m skeptical about pro-biotic drinks but you could try it, again there is no harm and they are quite nice to drink. There is some research supporting it http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15220671?dopt=Abstract
For painful spasms, you could try colpermin, now this is a drug but the active ingredient is peppermint oil. So mostly all natural.
In another answer recently, I mentioned that Chinese herbal medicine has been used with success providing drugs like aristolochia, clematis and stephania are avoided. An RCT did show that a herbal preparations containing nine plant extracts (STW 5) was effective in reducing symptoms in IBS.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14984373?dopt=Abstract
If your spasms are really bad then the best pharmalogical drug in this instance is probably a low dose tricyclic such as Amitriptyline.
Mebeverine and Alverine are smooth muscle relaxants and do reduce pain in IBS. They cause less side effects but in all honestly not many people benefit but it’s still worth a try: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11207510?dopt=Abstract
Also, I agree with SkepDoc, stress, emotional upset and anxiety play a big role in IBS.
There is no "best homeopathic treatment" for IBS because homeopathy does not treat symptoms or diseases, it treats patients who present different symptoms of diseases.
We are individuals and "one size does not fit all", so each of us needs individual attention and individual treatment. Not two patients present EXACTLY the same clinical picture for IBS. So, a qualified homeopath will take a full case history and prescribe the homeopathic medice which matches the patient’s physical, mental and emotional symptoms most closely. This is the basis of homeopathic medicine and, of course, it works.
Sambit, as already mentioned, homeopathy contains no active ingredients, so the only effect it can have is placebo.
Hi.I dont "believe" in Homeopathy so i cant tel you regarding that.Howver i can give you some suggestions regarding herbal/natural medicine if your interested.
Avoiding gluten is a good idea.
Enteric coated peppermint might be able to help.
If your from Australia,Instead of Colpermin ,which isnt available, youd get a product like Mintec instead or even better would be if you could find an enteric coated peppermint from a small health company so that you could support a small business.
Some home lifestyle changes can be made like eating without TV or other distractions & trying to relax/have relaxation while eating as there is interrelation between our brain + abdomen.
Also eating at regular, scheduled times & not eating erratically or through the night( i am a hypocrite here as i eat in the night)
Some exercise like swimming,skating,whatever etc.
I.B.S can sometimes be a "catchall" diagnosis and while you have possibly been diagnosed with IBS(without any diagnostic tests done?Or With? You didnt mention regarding this) you could possibly have one of a whole range of other disorders that has been misdiagnosed as IBS eg:Gluten sensitivity,Post giardiasis,Gastritis by any number of causes,Chrohns disease,Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth,Inflammatory Bowel Disorder,Lactose intolerance,Gastroparesis,Dumping syndrome, mild(relatively) liver problems where your not producing enough bile or a number of other things also.
The reason why there can be one person who has "IBS" saying they have constipation & another saying they have diarrhea etc is because sometimes some doctors put IBS diagnosis on too quickly without having done thorough enough testing to consider the above possible disorders.
A good doctor,does a good differential.
Therefore do beware of "one size fits all" solutions where people say just eat more fibre etc because as mentioned, Fibre helps some sufferers but it makes some people actually worse.
•Nevertheless, some things you could try are the Peppermint oil tablets(mintec, colpermin)
•Also probiotics like eg: Culterelle or keffir.
Some people say probiotics have been wonderful for them, some people say they are of no help at all.
Unfortunately also you might need to try different probiotics as they are not all the same.
•Aloe vera drink helps some people. There are no stuides(that im aware of) that say it is effective for this although the big problem here with studies regarding IBS & treatment,is & is going to be that all people that have been diagnosed with IBS but in reality could have different symptoms of different etiologies have been/will be enrolled in those IBS studies which is going to possibly effect the outcome of the studies where they arn’t accurate.
•Artichoke leaf extract you could try and has helped some people but dont use if you have gallbladder probs or bileduct obstruction.
•A number of Chinese herb formulas but also make sure they include no toxic ingredients.
•Also you could try fennel,coconut oil or milk,blackstrap molasses,buttermilk.
•Iberogast.
•Melatonin.
If anything makes your symptoms worse stop it immediately though.
While IBS is not related to food allergies per say, it can involve food sensitivities so remove any foods that you notice any symptoms after taking if you find there are any.
So take note even if you hvae mild stomach pains after eating certain foods or bloating, flatulence, constipation, diarrhe… etc & remove those foods.
Ultimately though, any dietary changes will need to depend on what you actual symptoms involve.
Discuss all this with your doctor first if you have any other conditions or are taking any other medications/herbs.
You could try a relatively bland diet of juices, soups, light vegetables, fish, red meat in slow cooker, and brown rice for a while though?
The usual, avoid refined sugar, sweets, softdrink, fatty fried foods, drink moderate amount of water etc.
Of course, avoid any artifical sweeteners like Equal etc.
Some people might need to restrict fructose too like real sweet fruits etc although some juices are ok.
Some might need to restrict Sorbitol too.
Fiber?-it helps some people,if you though have constipation and it causes you more constipation avoid it.Fibre makes some peoples G.I symptoms worse.

Herbal ingredients such as German Chamomile, Meadowsweet, Ulmus fulva and Sutherlandia frutescens have anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and digestive – health properties that make it an effective preventative for IBS flare ups. In addition to this, a number of herbal ingredients work to immediately relieve IBS symptoms.
Mentha piperita in particular has become widely known as a treatment for IBS, as this herb works by relieving cramps and gently relaxing the muscles of the digestive tract – thus effectively calming irritable bowels and reducing stomach pain.
Other beneficial herbs include Ginger, Fennel and Pelargoneum graveolens. Remember to always source your natural remedies from a reputable company to ensure maximum effectiveness, safety, and correct therapeutic dosage.

Peppermint essential oil is a great solution for irritable bowel syndrome. Take it in those little capsules and they seem to fix the problem.

There is “naturopathic” help if not homeopathic help for IBS.
I read a study at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0016508504021559/ (not my site). It showed the best probiotic to help with IBS is bifidobacterium infantis. If you can find an enteric coated tablet with b.infantis, it could go a long way toward helping your IBS symptoms.
All the best, and good luck.
