the crohn’s and colitis foundation has a website you can go to find updated information on IBD. they have a hotline, live chat, and a forum where you can post questions to other crohnies.
for ileostomies, go to the united ostomy assoc. of america. I’ve had my ileostomy for 23 yrs., crohn’s for 29 yrs. so feel free to email me your questions and i can help you.

Research ostomies as in iliostomy (spelling?) to see what they do with diseased colons. they cut them out and you evacuate your system into a bag.
Colitis, IBS, GI bleed, ulcerative colitis, polyps, colon cancer… to name a few.
now, as far as the colon being replaced… they do not do that. They usually remove a section of the colon and attach the reamaining ends together (anastomosis). bowel function is normal if they can save most of the colon. If they take out the end of the colon (including the rectum) they will make an ostomy. An ostomy is an artificial hole. They make them for different parts of the body. The one they use for the larger intestine (colon) is called a colostomy. Basically they take the end of the colon and cut a hole in your side and push the intestine through the hole. You are then hooked up to an ostomy bag where all fecal material is drained. They can also do what is called an ileosomy, which they will do if there is no colon left to make a colostomy out of. This is where they make an ostomy using the small intestine.
