The truth about colon cleanse/detox plans?
Ok.. I’ve tried to do a little research on this, and the internet is filled with a myriad of products, plans, etc. claiming to cleanse the colon and detox your system. I am not sure what to think. Are supplements really necessary? If so, are there products out there that are safe, with no "fillers", etc.? Obviously I realize a healthy diet and exercise are a must. I am just looking for a plan to detox my system and clean out the colon… There are so many things out there.. and I’ve also heard scary stories about "natural" products…does anyone have personal experience and/or reliable advice about this? Thanks so much
btw, I already eat plenty of fiber, fresh fruit/veg, and exercise daily.
I want to thank everyone for taking the time to answer. If the general consensus is that a "program" is not necessary, then is there something I can do with diet/fasting for 1-2 days to achieve the same effect? As mentioned, my diet is healthy (includes lots of fiber) and I exercise daily- but too often I still feel "backed up" (sorry, I know it’s not a pretty topic!)

Colon cleansing can be helpful. Those docs who aren’t scared by the alternative movement’s use of colon cleanses will tell you that YES stuff does build up there. All things not being perfect, the colon also is assaulted and can’t do its job in the perfect manner it was created to do it.
The best thing to do is plan a spring or fall yearly cleanse. It is best to use gentle products like what Garden of Life offers, or other equivalents. Avoid psyllium in your cleanse if possible as it is very harsh. I’ve used the Ultimate Cleanse, and like it, but it was a rather long experience. And, the psyllium content ended up making me get IBS mimic symptoms, so I had to stop.
Colon cleansing can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable to your wallet. Find an alternative health message board, and ask for people’s recommendations of what they liked.
The heart is supposed to work well to pump the blood around your body, while they lungs infuse oxygen and take away CO2, but we all know they need help occasionally too.
Remember to always drink plenty of water and get plenty of exercise.
if you eat adequate fiber and drink adequate amounts of water, you don’t need a "detox" or "colon cleanse", your colon is designed to cleanse itself, and detox your body for you, that is it’s function. All these products are nothing more than high powered laxatives that can really mess you up internally. A high powered way to part you from your money and your health.
Aloe vera juice worked great for me.

I do a detox once a year, and I can honestly say that it’s extremely helpful for my health. I lose weight when I do them and I have more energy. The key to this is looking for something that not only cleanses your colon but also every other organ in your body.
Cleanses work mainly by removing toxins from your body with the use of antioxidants. Simply drinking water and taking fiber will not do this effectively. Water will work to cleanse kidney, liver, and blood, but if you have not cleansed before, it will be VERY difficult to remove these toxins from your body.
I have incorporated Isagenix’s 30-day cleanse into my natural lifestyle. If you are already fit and don’t need to lose weight, I suggest the 9-day cleanse. It IS a little rough when you first do a cleanse but I can promise that you will feel better when you are done.
A good cleanse will include mega doses of vitamins to replace what is being washed away with all of the toxins. It’s easy to understand that you will wash away the good with the bad and need to replace it with more good.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I have done two 30-day cleanses and absolutely LOVED how I felt. I hadn’t felt that good in YEARS.
have used psyllium husk with bentonite clay. it definitely keeps you regular.
The only things you might need occasionally are a good fiber supplement and an herbal "detox" supplement. I like the brands Solaray and Yerba Prima (both available at a health food store) as they have quality products at reasonable prices. For Yerba, use the Daily Fiber (it contains five types of fiber). It’s very gentle and you do not detox too quickly if used as directed. A few weeks of each twice a year is sufficient.
There is no truth in them. If colon cleansing truly improved health then all you would need is an enema. Any "toxins" you may have there are metabolized out of the system in a matter of hours, naturally. Please be very cautious with any product that states it is "all natural", if it is in a pill, then it has been processed. Besides, many of the over the counter and prescription drugs on the market today are naturally occuring. For example penicillins were discovered in mold that grows on oranges, and on the other side Marijuana is 100% all natural! Also, herbal supplements do not required to meet FDA guidelines to be placed on the market. If you are taking any other prescription medications herbal supplements have potential to interfere with them. Especially anticoagulants and antihypertensive medications. Make sure you discuss the product with a pharmacist or call your doctor first. I know I sound like the commercials, but as and ER nurse I have seen life threatening medication interactions as a result of these "all natural" products. They are not as safe as you would think they are.
