When I was younger I use to hold in my bowel movements. I’m in my 30s now and I can’t seem to get things going again. I have tried almost everything, Health Force cleanses, herbal laxative, eating healthy, probiotics, magnesium, enemas, you name it. Recently I have been mixing homemade yogurt with a T. Psyllium for the last three weeks. I have been getting some movement but I have so much gas I think I’m going to explode! It has gotten to the point where nothing really responds and it seems I have no control over pushing anything out like the colon is numb inside. Also, because of all of this I am experiencing the gas not coming from rectum it comes directly out of pours. 15-20 minutes after I feel gas in my lower left abdomen I can smell a STRONG odor of eggs coming from me for days at a time. When I was somewhat gassy or constipated when I was younger I never had gas come out of my pours like this. Any explanation for this? I had blood tests done recently and everything looked ok except for high carnitine levels and raised cholesterol. I have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done as well. I am not sure if it is related but I also have severe gout symptoms in my feet and ankles on a weekly basis. The Dr. said to take IB Profen and no high purine foods which I don’t consume. I also get acne/boils that sometimes smell like rotten eggs all over my back and chest. Does anybody have any ideas? I haven’t got much help by going to the doctor. Thanks!
I quit drinking a couple years ago and I definitely know alcohol doesn’t help the problem. lol
I gotta say though, I think I had better bowel movements even when I was drinking.
Yogurt and high fiber seems to be giving me some relief. I don’t recall mentioning my "cure" with using yogurt and fiber. More of a process of conditioning my digestive track. I’m thinking dysbiosis and possible yeast overgrowth causing the problem. That might explain the acne/boils on chest. (yeast?) I think the gas is from introducing fiber to my diet and possibly the bacteria going to work. I have been to a GI dr. and since tests came back negative for major problems he said just keep yourself regular with Myralax, which didn’t work at all. Not much help. I guess what I’m asking is if anyone has had similar symptoms and have had success with treating it. Like I said it seems that my system is not responding to most laxatives. A couple weeks ago I tried Epsom salt and it didn’t respond at all. When I use to use it a year ago it created diarrhea. It almost seems impossible to create diarrhea if I had to. My goal for now is just to get my system going.
On Wednesday the 8th I used the bathroom and had a loose stool, upon wiping I had quite a bit of blood on the tissue paper. I was able to go once more the next morning, again with loose stool and blood. Now I can’t pass my bowels whatsoever. I have gone to a gastronomy center and now I have a colonoscopy in 3 days. I’ve had x-rays ruling out obstruction but they see a lot of stool that needs out. Only problem is I cannot pass any stool which I’m told I need to do so for a good exam. I have been on Miralax for 4 days with no luck, tried a small enema with no luck and have been on a liquid diet as well. What do I do? I am going to be starting my prep (magnesium citrate) as well as surprep on monday. I am hoping these work but if not what do I do? Will they perform something to cleanse me? HELP?
I also want to mention that I have had very slight BM maybe once a day but I know I still have a lot of stool in me. I still get hungry and pass gas…Thanks for the replys/answers. I never wanted to take a crap so bad in my life!!!
If you overdose on laxatives (which is basically what they make you do) will the tip of your small intestine be inflamed for the colonoscopy the next day?
Thanks!
I am not normally constipated, but as a result of a bad tooth I was not eating, and I was on a combination of antibiotics and pain killer (vicodin). I was severely constipated, so much so that after having not been able to go for about a week I did a saline enema. This ended the constipation; however, it lead to what has not become a very big nuisance and worry, rectal bleeding.
I have been bleeding 2-3 tablespoons of blood out of my bum 3-5 times a day for the last week. I called my family doctor, and he told me to go to the Emergency Department. There, they did an obstruction series of x-rays on my lower bowel (and found no blockage) also some blood work to see if my hemoglobin was OK (which it was), and a rectal exam in which he said he felt a "dry" inner hemorrhoid, and an amount of blood came out when he did the rectal exam. He said to schedule an appt. with my fam. doc. to set up a colonoscopy. It was probably a hemorrhoid from the constipation, but he thought it best I was checked out with the colonoscopy.
So, today is day 7 of this conundrum. I am tired, and tired of bleeding. It is also very worrisome. So, should I go back to the Emergency Dept. (being that it is sat. and my doctors office is closed)? Or, should I wait it out a few more days until my doc’s office is open?
I just had a colonoscopy this morning at about 7am…I feel great after sleeing all day, and I really want to get a shower. My instructions from the doctor say to wait a full 24 hours…Would anyone have any idea why you need to wait that long? I am just curious….
I’m 23 years old, and I’m very much in need of help. I’ve been dealing with endometriosis, but I didn’t know what it was until I diagnosed after a laparoscopy last April. I also have aspergers syndome, so this entire experience has left me very near wanting to kill myself in pain and frustration.
For the past two years, I had been dealing with debilitating rectal pain during my periods. It it absolutely earth-shattering. I cannot sit, move, walk, or even go to the bathroom without screaming in pain. My flow was so heavy that I had to wear adult diapers just to catch the flow, and I missed so much work and school. My last gyn put me on birth control, and that lightened my flow and the pain wasn’t as bad, but it was still there and extremely uncomfortable. I cried myself to sleep at night because of the pain. A colonoscopy in Oct 2010 ruled out anything wrong with my colon or intestines, and I’ve had five or six in-office rectal exams with that same colorectal surgeon. My last OBGYN gave me two laparoscopies, one in Feb 2010 and another in Jan 2011. Both times he said he didn’t find anything wrong, even though obviously there was something wrong. Then in February 2011, the pain started occuring even when I wasn’t on my period. I told my doctor, and finally in March he refused to see me again and told me to find another doctor because he didn’t know what was wrong with me. Safe to say I was in tears and depressed for a very long time.
I went to see a new OBGYN in April 2011. He is a very young doctor, graduated in 2006, and I like him a lot. The attention and understanding he gives me is like day compared to the night of my last doctor. He did a pelvic exam and a pap smear, and I was leaping off the table in pain, trying to keep from screaming, but it didn’t really work. He could tell I was in excrutiating pain. He put me on the Depo shot to stop my periods, and I’ve been spotting ever since. I’m due for my second injection this month (June 2011). We decided to do another laparoscopy (April 2011), because my last doctor never sent over my other medical records for him to see. After I woke up, he told me that I had stage 2 endo with the majority of it on my colon. I was shocked, because twice my last doctor had checked for just that condition, and hadn’t found anything. This was just mere months before this last procedure. I felt absolutely cheated and dumbfounded. The new doc burned off everything that he could see, and said that should take care of my pain, and that after the Depo started kicking in, I should start to feel better.
It has been a month since my procedure, and I am still in pain. It’s worse during my period, obviously, but every minute of every single day, I have trouble sitting, walking, or doing any kind of physical activity. There is pain and pressurein my rectum all the time. If I have any kind of hard stool coming out, or if I haven’t had a bowel movement yet that day, it’s extremely irritating and uncomfortale. It hurts to have a bowel movement at all. It feels like my anal muscles are constantly straining to do their duty. I’m trying to become sexually active, and every time my boyfriend tries to penetrate, I feel like something is being pushed out of my rectum, like I need to have a bowel movement, and it hurts like h***. I can hardly have a bowel movement by myself, I always have to use laxatives or something to soften it up, but the frequent soft stools are making my hemorrhoids flare up again, and that causes even more pain.
The majority of the endo was on my rectum, or at least that was where most of the scare tissue was. Why am I still in this much pain a month after my procedure? The pain never went away at all. He told me it was just that I was hurting because of having the endo removed, but certainly it shouldn’t take this long to heal? And it’s the exact same pain, only now I’m having trouble going to the bathroom by myself. I use laxatives and suppositories to help me have a bowel movement, but I can hardly stick one in my rectum because I feel so swollen inside there. I want to have a hysterectomy, at least have my uterus removed, but my doctor doesn’t want to do that. I am very young, but I do not want children. I have aspergers, a mental disorder, and a very bad history of breast cancer and heart disease in my family, so in my opinion, it would be irresponsible of me to have children in the first place. My doctor knows this, but he is still hesitant. He wants me to see a pain specialist, but I’m sick of covering up the pain. I want to know how to fix it as much as I can! I don’t expect a cure, but certainly there is something else going on that’s still causing me these problems!
I’m sorry if this was TMI. I’ve just been down this road so many times and reiterated this story to so many people that I’m at my wit’s end. I just want to have some som
I’ve had this problem for as long as I can remember, but I’m getting so fed up with it. It’s really starting to take a toll on my life. I constantly feel constipated, to the point that I can’t have any normal bowel movements. I don’t understand because I eat healthy and I exercise, but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ve tried eating more fiber, and it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. And I’ve tried a sort of bowel cleanse (similar to taking laxatives but not as strong). After a while, I get so constipated that I eventually get really bad diarrhea that becomes almost uncontrollable. When I try to go, its really hard, but when I’m not it seems to want to come out automatically.
It’s a really embarrassing problem and I hate it. I’ve been to the doctor and she told me to start eating more fiber (which I did). She said if I didn’t see any improvements to come back and they’d have to look into giving me colonoscopy and possibly surgery. I’m afraid to go to that length. Does anyone have any advice or any idea what’s causing this and how to treat it?
I have been having persistent diarrhea for months. I have been to doctor, and she wanted me to try some diet things, fiber and such. Then if that didn’t help was going to refer me to gastroenterologist.
Well, in between those 2 visits, I had my yearly mammo and was diagnosed with stage IIb invasive ductal carcinoma. I had a bilateral mastectomy and I am currently in chemo. I am also HER2+++ so, I am being treated for that as well.
Still having serious diarrhea issues, though and oncologist sent me to GI doc and I had a colonoscopy yesterday. No polyps, but he said my sigmoid was very inflammed and he sent off biopsies.
Obviously, I am worried. Is it possible to still have colon canacer without him finding any poyps or growths?
I am savvy enough to use Google, I was just hoping for some personal experience. Thank you for any answers.
My father needs a colonoscopy and I’ve heard that can range around 00……is there anyway to find a better price?
Thanks in advance.
I’ve been informed that, recently, a laxative used to cleanse the colon prior to a colonoscopy was found to cause kidney damage. Since a family member may have used it, I’d like to find out which one it was, and information about it.
Ok, here’s what I eat: brown rice with flax, grapefruit, apples, plums, cherries, grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, swiss chard, broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, onions, summer squash, tomatoes, spinach, hemp protein powder… I suffer from constipation, food sensitivities (gluten, soy, corn, nuts and seeds) and a continually bloated abdomen which is NOT ok because I model. I had a colonoscopy and was found to have a beautiful colon (I know, what?! gross) but a slow one. I don’t want to go on meds. What can I do? I drink plenty of water, only two cups of yerba mate a day, no salt. I exercise. I’ve started with some digestive enzymes, but I don’t know what else will help. Should I add egg whites back in the diet and try to cut back on some of my fiber? I don’t know if I could do it. Please please please help me.
Can anyone help? Colonoscopy is at 9am
I’ve been seeing a gastroenterologist about rectal pain and he suggested doing a flexible sigmoidoscopy without sedation rather than a full colonoscopy because I’m pregnant. He said we can remove any masses we would find during the sigmoidoscopy.
The thing is, he kept reiterating that polyps don’t hurt above the dentate line, internal hemorrhoids don’t hurt above the dentate line yet I have a mass above the detate line that hurts ALOT when I touch it. I know they don’t use anesthetic when they do hemorrhoid banding for internal hemorrhoids, so I’m assuming they wouldn’t use any anesthetic. But whatever it is, it hurts a lot just touching it so I can’t imagine the pain it would cause cutting into it. I’m pregnant so I really don’t want to do general anesthesia.
Does anyone know? Do they numb the area when they remove things from your rectal wall?

I now have to get a colonoscopy… I know that it is a procedure that they probably do not allow a family member to watch. However, my sister was wanting to be in the room with me, and i would i also like it if she were there… From personal experience, does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks
i get nauseous regularly, maybe a couple days a week ill have a few minute phase and then it goes away [almost always at night.] this has been happening since i last vomited in june, before i didnt have that feeling [i think its partially due to the fact that i am severely afraid of throwing up.] i also have extremely varying stools, maybe once a month ill try to go to the bathroom and a bit of mucus comes out instead, and once or twice before ive had pencil stools. andd other than that i get different [but considered normal] stools, and my diet is diverse so im pretty sure thats why. i dont bleed when i go to the bathroom nor is it painful.my grandfather had colon cancer but he was a heavy drinker/smoker. im 14, female, and have had my period for 2.5 years. im a vegetarian and i dance about 10 hours a week, though i got a fracture one month ago so i havent been able to properly exercise since then. i know that its rare for young people but the awkward stools/nausea for the past few months has started to worry me. thank you for any advice i really appreciate it, i dont want to get a colonoscopy or something :/
I had a sigmoidoscopy about 4-5 years ago and am considering getting a colonoscopy. I am a 58 yr old male and have developed a bothersome IBS condition.
I am on a clear diet and TPN. As long as I do not eat the swelling in small bowel goes down. When I eat the swelling returns and takes a few days to go down after I stop eating again. This does not sound like a symptom of chron’s. There has not yet been a colonoscopy or biopsy for definate diagnosis. I also have a drain placed in my lower right abdomen to drain an abcess caused by a tear in the colon due to the swelling. CT shows stranding in affected section. Does this sound like Chron’s or could this be something else.
A family member of mine had a colonoscopy over a year ago and his colon was punctured which led to infections. However, a year later he is still going to the bathroom around 20 times a day…losing sleep..feeling tired etc. He has had numerous tests, blood work, antibiotics, and nothing seems to work.
when the doctor sticks something up your rectum and shoots some type of fluid to clean your intestines…its not an Enema nor a Colonoscopy..
i just herd it in a conversation today but can’t remember the name…
I will be making an appointment for a Colonoscopy soon and would like to know that Kaiser prescribes for Colonoscopy prep. I’ve read on internet that some preps are bad for your kidneys. thx.
I heard that by the time the average person reaches 40yrs old they have 7lb of undigested meat in their intestines. Although obese people have more. It was reported Elvis had 42lb, and Marlon Brando had 63lb. My question is when you have a colonoscopy they drink a gallon of Drano, Not really, but it is some kind of cleaning stuff. You sh*t and then kind of pea out your butt, for 3 hours. Then when they do the medical test, they also flush you out. So when you have this done, are we not starting fresh, as clean as a baby, and we start clean? If not why?
I just had a quick question involving MEPS? When I am getting a medical evaluation and tell them I recently had a colonoscopy and endoscopy for abdominal pains could that eliminate me from joining the military? I don’t see how it could because the doctors who conducted the colonoscopy said that it was nothing. I personally think it’s lactose intolerance or stress. But could that reduce my chances of joining?
Okay, so i ate breakfast this morning, totally forgetting that i had to prep for my colonoscopy tomorrow. I did all of the prep work and everything is clear in the toilet. I should be okay right?
I either have Crohn’s disease or colon cancer, on Thursday morning I go in for a colonoscopy.
I’m only 18 so I’m really nervous.
I know a lot about both things, but what do they do once they diagnose you?
Like, what’s the first step?
How soon after the colonoscopy will they know?
