Rectal pain during my period?
Why do I get rectal pain during my period? Sometimes it is very sharp and stabbing like a sharp knife trying to come out of my rectal area, and other times is is just a whole, whole massive amount of dull presure on my rectal area. My doctor has scheduled a colonoscopy in October, but it is a couple weeks away and I am very very nervous, any ideas what it could be?
p.s. I also have a lot of pain with intercourse, my husband is very patient but we have been unable to figure out what is causing the pain.

could be endometriosis
i been getting this too for the past few periods i dont know what it is but i do get nerovus too good luck
I’m not sure, as I’ve always gotten pains similar to yours about 1-3 days before my period. The pain stopped when I went on the Pill, but I do get some pain now that I am on a lower dosage bcp. Based on that, I would assume it is hormonal, but I’m not sure. You’re not alone!
Pain during sex is something completely different. It could be cysts or a variety of other things. It’s really hard to say, but hopefully your doctor will have an answer. Best of luck!

I can relate. When I was about 15 I began experiencing a strange but severe rectal pain before, during, after my period. It was awful. It felt swollen and severely uncomfortable…you described it well when you said sharp pain, like something is trying to “come out” but there’s nothing there. They put me on the pill, which I have now been on for 10 years. The pain went away within a few months of being on the pill and has not returned, except now I am in my mid-twenties and have recently begun experiencing pain during intercourse that seems to radiate towards the “back”.
It definitely seems possibly they are connected. All you can do is do any procedure the doc recommends to rule out serious problems, and if it’s nothing then maybe you could consider going on the pill (if you aren’t already).
I can also relate. I have suffered with this for years. Originally I was given a water pill which did not help. After that every approach was tried from using birth control pills to the depo. Nothing helped and i was prescribed hydro’s on an as needed basis for pain management. I became pregnant and the pains stopped. I gave birth to my first child and then had a second. I was without pain for approx. 5 years but then the came back. I went to the doctor’s and found out that my uterus is sitting on my rectum which would explain why I would get this pain ONLY a couple of days before my cycle and a few days into my cycle. The pains are not present any other time. He has therefore recommended a partial hysterec. which would remove the upper part of my uterus that sits on my rectum. I am still continuing to research this before I make a decision. With that said I found a term called proctalgia fugax which seems to be the technical name for this type of condition. I hope this information is useful.
I also suffer with this when I have my period, its not just the shooting pains I get but when I have a bowel movement it feels like my insides are being ripped out, it’s incredibly painful, my doctor suspects I have endometriosis and all the research into my symptoms also suggest this, I have an appointment with a gynaecologist soon so I’m hoping they’ll get me sorted, it sounds like you also have this problem.
I had something similiar and it turned out to be anal abscess fistula disease.
Please be assertive with your doctor when discussing to make sure they do all the necessary tests to rule it out!
Severe rectal pain with menstruation; stabbing, shooting pains; a constant heaviness in the pelvic area…I have been experiencing these symptoms for several years now, always at the onset of my period and usually lasting (most severely) for the first 2-3 days of bleeding. We originally thought it to be endometriosis, but after being referred to an excellent OB/GYN, he noted that my uterus was enlarged as well – to approximately the size it would be at three months pregnancy. (Which explained other symptoms I had been having: “puffy” or swollen abdomen, feeling like I was “full” of fluid, long, heavy periods.) The final diagnosis was adenomyosis, to be treated with a laparoscopic hysterectomy.
I have been experiencing the rectal pain and painful bowl movements during my period over the last year or so. I have extremely painful cramps and they seem to be getting worse. The dull and consistent rectal pain is just awful and when I do have bowel movements, it feels like it’s tearing my left fallopian tube apart. It mostly occurs right before and during my period.
I am 19 years old and when I suggested the possibility of endometriosis to my doctor she said I was too young. This was frustrating to hear because one of my friends(one month older than myself) has just gone through a removal laprascopy of her endometriosis.
I do have pain during certain sexual positions and almost always a few minutes after intercourse. My boyfriend is afraid that I am not able to have children. We have had unprotected sex for 2 yrs (using only the “pull out” method)and I have not once had a known pregnancy. We both want a baby in the next few years so I thought about taking the pill like my doctor wanted me to until I am ready to conceive. She said if I do have endometriosis, the pill will stop it from progressing further. But yet she still doubts the possibility..
I have been having anal pain during my period (about 6 years) and it is like someone stabbing me with a knife. I believe I might have a tilted uterus, which would explain that pain.
So does anyone know anyone in St. Louis that specializes in knowing whether or not these symptoms described in several of these posts are from endometriosis, uterus sitting on rectum, tilted uterus, anal abscess fistula disease (which sounds the worst)or adenomyosis? For about 3 months now I have had really strange “internal moving sensations” in the rectum area, this then usually follows up with the beginning of my period. I have experienced all of the anal stabbing and terrible pain associated with passing stool but other times while on my period too. Does anyone relate to this strange situation or am I the lucky unique one here. It is so easy when you are pregnant you don’t have to worry about any of this. I would appreciate any referrals. Thanks!
ive been having the same problem its like something trying to come out but its nothing and it hurts real bad but usually its pressure fro my rectum to my vagina but on a scale to 1-10 its a 6 or 7 and it’ll even make me get up and say OWW i really dont know what it is its been happening for a long time i dont usualy have cramps but some time i get this terrible sharp pain throuh my navel right before my period and im on 15 yrs old
im 14 and this has been going on sice november. i know exactly how you feel. my pain is so severe i’ve cried. but i made an appointment at the doctor to see what he can do.
I’ve been having the same sharp stabbing pains in my lower rectum, bowel and pelvic area, usually starting a day or two before my period and lasting a few days. Sometimes the pain feels like it’s shooting from my rectum all the way thru my belly button and its hurts so bad I can even sit down. I’m 28 and have had the problem since my late teens. Since I also have dysfunctional bleeding and fertility problems, my doctor thinks it’s endometriosis. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine has been a life saver for regulating my periods and helping to control the pain. I was skeptical at first, but all I know now is that it works!
hi all was reading your comments and without sounding bad was reading and feel relieved im not alone..since i had my son i have been gettin really bad pains during my period when ever i need to move my bowels its like a stabbling almost like my insides are being pulled out r ripped apart very sore i went for scans on my overies and there was just a cyst on one my ovewries but they said that wouldnt cause the pain..am wooried i could have bowel cancer but the pain only comes at time of my period which is strange and i do get pain during sex sometimes.i have been told i have a lob sided womb so maybe that da cause but im with a new partner and wooried that i may need a hysterectomy and wont be able to have kids
Hey everyone… Had some of the same symptoms and went to the ER last night, they did an ultrasound, doctor said I had an ovarian cyst that ruptured and the fluid and blood was sitting in my abdomen and on my rectum causing the severe pain. Also get checked for hemroids! Look both of them up, see if the symptoms match! Good luck everyone, I know the pain can be unbearable!!!
