Parakeets and Bene Bac? How to use it, how much, and how often?
I had 2 parakeets, male and female, but the male died a couple of days ago. He was at least 5 years old, though nobody knows his real age. I spent about 3 hours yesterday cleaning and scrubing and rinsing cage, etc. (And rinsing and rinsing.) I used bleach on pan, and dawn on eveything else. (Yes, the bleach was diluted, about 8oz for 160 oz water.) She seems to be fine, still singing, and droppings look normal. I treated both with an antibiotic for 9 days, when he started acting sick. It’s been about 3 days since finishing treatment, and I was reading about birds needing bacteria in the intestines after antibiotics. How do I give Bene Bac to her, how often, and how much? Is it easier to use the gel, or the powder? I’m thinking of having it flown in overnight, so I’d like to know which one I should use on such a small bird. How do you store it? Has anyone got any experience in treating parakeets, and has any tips? Thanks.

The powder is easier to use. Keep the powder in the freezer. Sprinkle a tiny amount of powder on some veggies in a dish and then place the dish in the cage. The veggies should be warm to hot when you sprinkle the benebac on the veggies. This will activate the benebac.
Just a little bit of a background on the benebac powder. It’s not activated while in the freezer and can last a good long time as long as it’s kept in the freezer. Where as the gel is already activated. The gel has to be put down the birds throat, and is nasty tasting and might really piss your bird off at you. Not a good choice! The powder, is none tasting and can be used as a weekly preventative and maintenance. But yogurt is just as good too, just not as much of gram pos rods go into yogurt as they are in benebac powder.
Use the powder for 4 days, then once a week, to get the gram pos rods started in the digestive tract. You might see some loose fecal matter for a day or two.
Good Luck!
