Is it common to have a colonoscopy procedure and then a groin hernia repair right after?
My surgeon today told me that he can take care of both the colonoscopy and the hernia surgery the same day one after the other? Is this a safe process to have both done at basically the same time?

No it is not common, but it should be perfectly safe and probably cost effective. Saves you an extra day of clear liquids.
I suppose so. I have had both done; but, not at the same time. Logically, you will be sedated so it is technically conceivable. However, that being said, I would not let a surgeon do my colonoscopy and in fact told him that. I prefer going to a gastroenterologist who is board certified and an expert in colonoscopies. I just figure let the proper expert take care of the problem.
Sounds like a fine idea to me. You would have to do bowel prep for each, why not get both taken care of the same day?
The bowel prep is annoying, but not as bad as fasting that whole day before.
