With any surgery you will have a risk for infection, perforation, death, etc. Your physician should inform you of all the risks before going into surgery. And if he doesn’t or leaves questions unanswered, you need to ask them before going under the knife. Since you have had prior infection you may be at risk for infection the second time around. The main thing with having your colostomy reversed is preventing a post op ileus or stopping of the bowel. After surgery it will be very important to walk minimum of 3-4 times a day to get the bowels working again. You’ve been through it before so you know the importance of ambulation after surgery as well as deep breaths and coughing to prevent pneumonia
In skilled hands should be almost risk free.
Every major surgery can get wrong. But if you think about it, you don’t really have any choice but to have it. Just take your surgeon’s advice and teaching for the preparation pre-operatively and post-operatively.
