How to keep kitty from getting a post-operative infectin?
My cat recently had surgery to remove an obstruction in his intestines. He is supposed to come home tomorrow and I am very concerned about keeping his incision clean. Will he likely be wearing a bandage? I know he’ll have a collar to prevent him from biting at it. What else can I do to prevent infection? My carpets are on the nasty side, (no time to do anything but vacuum before he comes home), and I don’t want him to get sick if he should lie on them.

Since your cat had a surgery on his intestines the doctor will be putting him on antibiotics anyway. The greatest risk of infection is if the sutures in the intestine come loose since there is LOADS of bacteria in the intestines (more than there is on your carpet). But to keep the incision clean just keep an eye on it. Check it twice a day and wipe with a moist clean cloth. If there is alittle discharge you can wipe it away with hydrogen peroxide on a cloth or cotton ball. Other than that observe your cat for signs of peritonitis (infection of the abdominal cavity). There would be redness and swelling at the site of infection with a foul smelling discharge. They may become painful in areas of the abdomen other than right where the surgery was done. They often become dehydrated and you will see them drinking large volumes of water. Other than that your veterinarian should be able to advise you of what specifically would raise concern associated with the specific type and location of the foreign body. Good luck and I hope he recovers well.
HE WILL PROLLY HAVE STAPLES AND THE DR USU. GIVES THEM A DOSE OF ANTIBIOTIC, IF HE DOESN’T HAVE A COLLAR, JUST MAKE SURE HE DOESN’T LICK IT……CATS ARE UNLIKE DOGS IN HEALING WOUNDS BY LICKING THEM (SO MY VET SAYS)
He probably should be wearing a bandage. Ask the vet about what disinfectants you can use for him when you go to pick him up. Change the bandages often. I think a weak peroxide would work, but make sure.
