How safe is it to take Fentanyl and Versed due to a colonoscopy while I am pregnant?
I am almost 10 weeks pregnant, and will be almost 12 weeks when my colonoscopy is scheduled. I am very very worried about the effects of these two drugs while I am carrying a child. The doctor said that I have a very minimal chance or harming my baby. I was thinking about doing it with out drugs at all, but every time I think about it, I cringe. Please only answer if you have a medical background, and have a good idea as to what you are talking about. Thank you.

Although the medication does leave the body fairly quickly, I would advise against it, unless there is a very urgent need for colonoscopy (such as with blood in the stool). You will still be in the first trimester at almost 12 weeks, the time when critical organs and systems are forming. I would not want my baby exposed to opioid medications during that period. These medications are in the same class as morphine, adrenaline and heroin, and the body is known to adjust its response to repeated use of these medications. Although your baby would be exposed to an opioid only one time, you would not want to risk any alteration in opioid receptivity at such a critical time in development. So again, unless there is an urgent need to diagnose a problem that may affect your and your baby’s health, I would recommend you delay the procedure until after birth. Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck!
There is no way under the sun you could get me to use those drugs while pregnant. Is this a gastrointesinal doc telling you it’s safe? I strongly suggest you get your OB doc involved, if the colonoscopy can wait then that is what I would do.
They use a very small amount and it leaves your system very quickly. I have had it done without the meds and you do NOT want to go through that. Horribly painful and if you aren’t relaxed they won’t be able to get the scope up inside you.
Talk to your OB and ask them about it. Is the colonoscopy really necessary—then it might be worth it.
no way I would allow this
