How painful is the cleansing for preparation for a colonoscopy?
My 3 year old son is scheduled for a colonoscopy on friday. He has to take laxatives to cleanse his vowels and can only have liquids on thursday. The laxatives sounds painful and i don’t know how he will go about not eating for the whole day. Has anyone else gone through this?

It isn’t to painful just uncomfortable. Make sure to have baby wipes and vaseline handy. Before he takes the laxatives, rub a little vaseline between his butt cheeks so that it will protect his skin from irritation. Use the baby wipes to gently wipe. After each wipe, put more vaseline.
Because of the laxative he will need to constantly drink water, this should make him feel full. If they are making him take fleet phospho soda laxative, mix it in some sprite/sierra mist/7up, this really hides the nasty flavor. They usually allow clear liquids so you can alternate between water and soda, this should keep a little hunger away.
Put a movie on and have him just relax. Toward the end of the day after he has gone to the bathroom plenty, have him take a nap if he can, that may also help time pass. Otherwise try not to eat in front of him or take him anywhere that will make him want to be hungry or fussy. Give him lots of love and just be there to take care of him.
Good luck with your little guy.
Try calling your doctor and asking what you can do about the hunger.
He should be able to give you some helpful tips for your young son.
You could likely get the procedure changed to the morning, however more intense cases and patients with diabetes will probably get priority.
As for the laxative, they are not much fun but not really painful.
Good luck!
(Bowels by the way. Not vowels)
MY HUSBAND HAD A COLONOSCOPY, AND AFTER DRINKING ALL THE LAXATIVE, HE JUST HAD TO MAKE SURE HE WAS NEAR THE BATHROOM MOST OF THE DAY. DON’T THINK IT HURT, JUST CLEANED THE BOWELS OUT. HE ALSO WAS ON A LIQUIED DIET, WHICH CONSISTED OF CLEAR LIQUIDS, (I BELIEVE THAT INCLUDED BROTH, JELLO, NO RED COLORED STUFF THO, OF COURSE ALL THE WATER HE COULD DRINK AND I THINK 7-UP, BUT YOUR DOCTOR SHOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU A LIST OF ACCEPTED LIQUED FOODS.
You can give him chicken broth. Try Campbell’s chicken noodle soup drained(no noodles or chicken). Believe me once he takes the Lax he won’t want to eat! It is not as painful as it sounds! Just make him comfortable and after wards he will probably sleep the rest of the day. Good Luck!
Hope this helps!
is he having to take laxatives or drink the clear bowel prep? Laxatives can cause cramping, but the clear prep (golytely) is not painful at all.
My Dad gets this procedure done every so many years. The laxative they use these days is not normally painful (but i don’t know what they give kids) – just cleans the body out and you kind of feel weak. My dad was able to eat jello, broth, clear liquids, kool aid, gatorade, etc. the entire day before the procedure (except i think not after midnight)… so I suspect as long as you keep the sugary-kind of drinks/jello available, he’ll be fine as far as energy level. I do know my dad said that you are put to sleep for the procedure, and when you wake up, you are immediately given orange juice for energy. You are somewhat groggy from the sedative for a few hours after the procedure. You are also extremely hungry, but you don’t want to eat anything too much or too heavy after having nothing in the system from the day before. Toast, eggs, oatmeal, rice, light stuff is good. My dad also says that they put a lot of air in the colon during the procedure (I guess they have to to get a good visual), so you kind of have a lot of "wind" afterwards. He doesn’t dread it at all, even though he’s been through it so many times already. I suspect your son will bounce back very quickly – kids don’t seem to mind anything – at least the first time around.
Talk to the people giving the test and see if you can take the test in the morning and if they have any suggestions. About the liquids, I would just do the liquid diet and try to keep him distracted so he won’t want food as much. Best of luck. I hope he is being treated by a pediatric hospital. They are the best at catering to kids needs. Call the nurse or technician if you need help. They are great about helping.
Well my son has been constipated for most of his life. He has been flushed out twice because of it. The stuff they used is the same as the laxatives they use for a colonoscopy. In both times he has never had any pain with the laxitives. Basically it just seeped out most of the time and then at night when he was a sleep it flushed out Big time. Make sure you have some really good nappies and plastic on his bed.
As for the eating they have to drink so much of that laxitive that they feel full and bloated the whole day.
Your son will be fine. I hope the test goes well. I wish you, your son and your family all the best.
PS
Have fun cleaning all the poop. The first waves of it were insane!

I’m also surprised that they are going to give them this laxative with out a nasal gastric tube. It tastes disgusting.
