The same way for a colonoscopy. If the surgery is planned, the patient will be required to go on a clear liquid diet the day or two before surgery as well having to take a colon prep (cleanse) product to clean the colon more throughly.
If the surgery is emergency surgery with no prep, the patient may end up with a nasogastric tube and on heavy antibiotics for a period of time postop.
You do this yourself. It is called an enema. You fill this bottle with water and attach the hose and nozzle then insert the nozzle in your anus and let the water run in. Of coarse you sit on the toilet while doing this and expel the water and fecal matter.

The day before surgery nothing to eat after breakfast. You need to start eating liquid clear soup and jello for lunch and dinner. After 6 O’clock that evening you need to drink the gallon of the prep kit (follow the instruction) I believe one glass every hour until the gallon of the prep mixture is finished.
You will notice about an hour later that you will need to keep running to the washroom. This procedure will empty out your colon. The day of the surgery ( Nothing to drink or eat).
If you do eat or drink and you do not follow the instructions, you are just wasting your time and need to start the prep procedure all over again.
