It depends on how it started, if it was colitis, if she had a blood clot and so on.
Ischemic colitis (Ischaemic Colitis – British English) is a medical condition in which inflammation and injury of the large intestine result from inadequate blood supply. Although uncommon in the general population, ischemic colitis occurs with greater frequency in the elderly, and is the most common form of bowel ischemia[1][2][3]. Causes of the reduced blood flow can include changes in the systemic circulation (e.g. low blood pressure) or local factors such as constriction of blood vessels or a blood clot. In most cases, no specific cause can be identified.[4]
Ischemic colitis is usually suspected on the basis of the clinical setting, physical examination, and laboratory test results; the diagnosis can be confirmed via endoscopy. Ischemic colitis can span a wide spectrum of severity; most patients are treated supportively and recover fully, while a minority with very severe ischemia may develop sepsis and become critically ill.[5]
Patients with mild to moderate ischemic colitis are usually treated with IV fluids, analgesia, and bowel rest (that is, no food or water by mouth) until the symptoms resolve. Those with severe ischemia who develop complications such as sepsis, intestinal gangrene, or bowel perforation may require more aggressive interventions such as surgery and intensive care. Most patients make a full recovery; occasionally, after severe ischemia, patients may develop long-term complications such as a stricture[6] or chronic colitis.[7]

I have just lost my mum 2weeks ago to this too. She was in hospital 3 times in space of 3 weeks and doctors kept sayin they couldn’t find anything wrong even after 3 scans and an x ray . She got really poorly and they just said prob a blocked bowel but it shud flush it’s self out. She got really sick they rushed her to theatre and when she was opened they found her small bowel was dead and part of her large bowel too. She died in theatre!! She had just turned 59 . I want to know why the doctors didn’t see this! She vomiting badly and in horrendous pain they kept giving her antibiotics and pain relief but did nothing else til the morning of her death when her bloods where thru the roof and her blood pressure and pulse were barely there!!! If they knew her bowel was blocked why didn’t they operate straight away . She suffered a terrible death and I’m so angry they even made her feel like she was lying about her symptoms.
Hi M,
I feel your pain. My Mom also died 2 months ago from a dead bowel. I wish I knew the answer. But my understanding is that in can happen quickly. I have been told by various MDs (even my GP who was not involved and has emerg experience) that this is hard to diagnose. Trust me, I know that this brings little comfort. I was also told that other issues can mask the specific problem. My Mom had in fact went in the hospital for a hernia operation and her stomach pains were not pinpointed. But I have also been told that there is not much that can be done if there is a blood clot. I guess its like a stroke in some sense; but slower. They operated my Mom but as it happened so fast, once they opened her up, they knew that nothing could be done. And then my world collapsed.
I am very sorry for your loss.

Same situation with my 89 year old grandmother. Bless her heart, went into the emergency room this past Saturday with severe abdominal pain, was told she probably needed to have a bowel movement! Admitted her and ran a few tests and continued to tell her the same thing… you need to have a BM. Pain continued to get worse, with her begging for major pain meds, nothing helped!! On Sunday morning the doctor came in and checked her abdomen an it was distended and very sore to the touch which it hadn’t been the day before. Decided to do a CT Scan, around 2:00, took her in for surgery to remove blockage – probably just scar tissue from a previous gall bladder surgery. So they said. Dr. came out 1/2 after surgery began and said her whole small intestine was dead – black!! There was nothing they could do for her and she prob. wouldn’t make it through the night! It is very hard to understand why it took so long for them to do anything but tell her she needed to poop, and by Monday morning at 1:45 she went to be with the Lord. Unbelievable how this all happened!!!!
I feel your grief, and am very sorry for your loss also.

Hi Tracy
I am also very sorry about your loss. I know it is not very helpful but the fact that she lived to be 89 is amazing. You and your family were blessed to have had so many years.

i had this happen to me. I am 55 years old, happened within 6 hours and was told after surgery a meter of small intestine was removed, it had died most people would think it was a case of the flu vomiting and diearearha the color of all of this was green and very smelly foul taste .only reason i went to emergency was i felt like my heart was racing. doctor said i had apprx.2hours of life left in me luckly i decided to go to hospital. dont second guess your self unsure go get help!!!
Hi,
I also lost my mum to ischemic bowel on 25th january, i am confused aswell, my mum was perfectly healthy until she ate her dinner on the sunday afternoon and then a couple of hours later had an upset stomach, by sunday evening the upset stomach had gone but she had gripping pains, by monday eve she still had stomach pains and slight backache but we all thought she had a bug, by tuesday morning she couldnt speak and looked as if she had a stroke, she was rushed into hospital but after a brain scan was cleared of a stroke, but they didnt know what was wrong, she deterioated rapidly and was put on life support, they told us she had septic shock, they then decided to scan her stomach and said she had a little blockage and that they needed to operate, when they opened her up her whole bowel had died and there was nothing they could do for her, My mum fell asleep at 7.30 wednesday night. hOW THE HELL CAN THIS OF HAPPENED SO QUICK she never had been ill or had any side effects untill that dreaded sunday afternoon, I miss my mum so much.
Lisa,
It is just really frustrating to think what would have been if they could have diagnosed it right away -
I am so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel! It’s amazing to me how this can happen so quickly and take the doctor’s so long to diagnose!!! My grandmother was very healthy as well, and not even 48 hours after she was admitted into the hospital she was gone
my mum died last monday from the same ting, they said it was the vomiting bud at first but when they opened her up her small bowel had died,10 hrs later she died,i cant understand why they didn se what was wrong an fix it,im so angry.
My beautiful 91 year old nan passed away at 3am this morning, after weeks of abdonimal pains and being treated for a hernia we rushed her to hospital Monday as her condition worsened.
After opening her up the sugeon came to us to explain the situation and that nothing could be done. They enduced a coma and all we could do was wait for the inevitable to happen.
She was so strong she held on for nearly 30 hours and then slowing fell asleep forever whilst we watched in disbeleif this morning.
Nothing can prepare your for the pain and agony of loosing someone you love so much to somthing so cruel.
