starch is a branched polymer of glucose arranged in alpha 1,4 and alpha 1,6 bonds. The enzyme amylase ( from the pancreas ) degrades starch into two- sugar units ( dissacharides ) called maltose ( the alpha 1,4 glucose bonded to glucose ) and isomaltose ( the alpha 1,6 glucose bonded to glucose ). These disaccharides are degraded to the monosaccharide, glucose, by the disaccharidases, maltase and isomaltase, respectively. These are located in the hair-like projections of the villi called microvilli. The glucose is then absorbed by an active process ( ATP driven ) using a symport with sodium ion ( sGLT transporters ) or by facilitated diffusion processes called GLUT
transporters .
