colonoscopy?
I am having a colonoscopy this week .My dr. is doing one to find out what is causing my cramping and abdominal pain. I have never had one done before (I’m only 25), but am worried–Will I be fully asleep during this or just out of it? I have read that ask people to move positions during this procedure, and wondered how people could move if they’re awake. Any advice or info is appreciated. Thanks!

The actual colonoscopy itself won’t be a problem for you, you’ll be knocked out on pain medication. And when it’s over with you won’t even remember the procedure being done. The worst part is the preparation. Not eating foods a few days before, just liquids.
The colonscopy itself was a piece of cake. I wasn’t put under completely, but whatever they gave me, I was totally out of it. I thought they hadn’t even done it yet when I came to. No problem. The part I didn’t like was the stuff you have to take the day before, All I’ll say is when you take that stuff they give you, stay very, very close to the bathroom, and wear very loose clothes, no jeans.
I have had about 5 or 6 colonoscopies. They sedated me with Versed and Demerol. They always say you won’t remember anything, but I usually remember a few seconds of really bad pain. I’m not sure if you are really "asleep" or if you just forget most of it. When my mom had one, she said she didn’t remember anything.
The worst part by far, in my opinion, is having to take the laxative before and getting the really bad diarrhea to clean out the colon. The procedure itself is not that big of a deal, and you can eat if you want afterwards, or just go home and take a nap. You can’t drive that day, so you can’t go to work or school.
They don’t put you to sleep for this but they do give you enough medication that you won’t remember much of anything.
It doesnt hurt and you dont have to have any meds at all, that way when they are done you can get dressed and leave.lots do it with out any being sedated.
Whats up. I just had a colonoscopy 2hrs ago. I was scared shit to have it done. As far as the prep goes , i had to drink some stuff called colyte. At times ur gonna feel like ur never gonna get through it, you will. Cause the stuff is gonna make you go to the bathroom alot to completly clean u out. Now when i got there this morning , i was told what was gonna be done. I didn’t want to be knocked out , i wanted to stay awake for it all. Cause i had this fear of not coming out of it. The Dr told me that he would feel more comfortable if i was out of it alittle. It does help. The Dr will be able to get the job done faster and more accurately if u went under. All i remember was the guy injecting this white looking stuff into my IV , saw it going in. The next thing i knew i woke up lookin at my fiance. All you will feel is some mild to moderate cramping , its all gas. They have to inject air into ur colon so the scope can freely move around. I’m 28. You will make it through it. BTW , my results were normal.
you can request sedation, but from personal experience it’s TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY. I had mine done with a very tiny amount of Demerol only (and I didn’t want that, but the Dr insisted.) Except for about 2-3 seconds of very mild cramping when the Dr went around the transverse colon, the entire procedure was completely painless. I watched the entire thing on the monitor. It was very interesting believe it or not. I even watched the Dr remove and cauterize a polyp..also totally painless. Your colon has no nerve endings, so if you just relax you’ll be fine.
Should you choose sedation, please DO NOT GO WITH VERSED!!! Versed is an amnesiac that does nothing for pain, the only thing it’s good for is to give you memory loss so you won’t recall the procedure. This is a very bad drug and should be banned entirely from use on people. I had it once in 1991 for an endoscopy, and I’ve had anxiety and depression every since. you may want to check out http://www.versedbusters.com, and http://www.askapatient.com. about this god-awful drug.
You’ll be fine, don’t worry. Once it’s over you’ll laugh about how scared you were to go through with it.
Feel free to email me if you’d like, and let me know how it went.
Best of luck, I’ll keep you in my prayers.
