2y.o. with blood in stools/rectal pain?
My son, 2 years old, has been complaining, for about two weeks now, of rectal pain. When asked what it hurts like he says, "it itches like I have to go poopy." It bothers him at all times of the day, but not all day long necessarily.
About a week ago I thought I noticed some blood on his stool, but wasn’t positive, so decided to keep watching. On Saturday, he definitely had blood on his stools and it was on the toilet paper when we wiped as well. I took him to urgent care and the doctor looked at his anus and felt inside. He didn’t feel anything or have any bleeding at the time. He decided to treat him for a yeast infection of the anus. Currently we are applying a mix of anti-itch hydrocortizone cream and Lotrimin (Athlete’s foot cream) three times a day for 5 days.
As of this morning, my son was still having pain and itching. He had a BM last night with no improvement from the day before and complained of pain while passing it. He has also, a few times, grabbed his abdomen and said,
"my body hurts." This has happened just randomly and while urinating. He has never had problems with constipation or abnormally large or hard stools. He has had a few unexplained, long lasting bouts of diarrhea in the past.
Any ideas?? We are supposed to make an appointment to go back if he is not feeling better by Wednesday. I am having a hard time with this diagnosis for some reason…
His stools are a normal texture/color. (not hard, black, tarry…) The blood is typically on the stool at the end of the movement. It is not drops of blood in the toilet, but on the stool. There also has been blood on the paper when we wipe that is bright red in color.
We are going to the doctor this afternoon after another bloody stool this morning. Thanks for all the good answers.

If this was an a person in their teens or and adult I would think it was as serious unless it was black blood which is usually internal bleeding. But taking his age into consideration I would deffinatly take him to another doctor. Especially if he is grabbing his abdomen and complaining of pain. They need to do more then just feel inside with their finger. So I would deffinatly get a 2nd opinion from another doctor. Also if the abdomen pain is new you should call the doctor and see if he/she can see your son today or tomorrow. Good luck and I hope everything goes okay.
What are you waiting for see a doctor asap.
You need to contact his regular pediatrician and get in there ASAP. Nothing against UC doctors, but if he is still in pain, a second opinion is probably warranted.
I hope he feels better.
Sounds like he may either have an infection of both areas. Another possibility is that he has eaten something that has affected his gastric tract. I would suggest going earlier and calling your doctor about the new systems. Also If you are unhappy with the diagnosis please by all means take him to another doctor and ask for a second opinion.
i would be very concerned, and im a nurse
there are many things that he should have been checked for especially since he is having abdominal pain with the bleeding
keep pushing for answers
pay attention to the color of the stool, if it is black or has a candy cane like spiral of blood in it, take him to the doctor immediately. Even if he doesn’t and the doctors can’t find anything wrong with him, take him to a childrens gastrointerologist (a specialist). Get this taken care of as fast as you can. Also you may want to note if he is eating less or has abdominal pain.
First, Lotrimin is NOT for the genital or anal area of a persons body! I’m sure if you read the packaging you will see that it clearly states not to use it in such areas.
I would definitely take him to see his normal pediatrician…
Those Urgent Cares are good for the weekend when doctors offices are closed but they are usually so rushed and crowded that they can’t devote the time neccessary to the patient!
I would take him for a second opinion as soon as possible!
Good luck to you and the lil’ one!
I would start giving him stool softeners to make things come out easier, but I don’t know what is safe for 2 year old so you’d have to find that out from someone who knows what 2 year olds can take. I like docusate but don’t know the age limits for it. The doc would probably know more than I do though.
I also wonder if he might be having a food allergy and some trouble digesting something. I’m not a nurse though. You should probably look to the professionals on this one. Your baby is your precious one after all! Sorry. Hope he gets better.
check to see if your son has worms
