10 Reasons Why American Healthcare Is Better Than You’ve Been Told
By Jonah Goldberg
From Hoover’s Scott Atlas (who’s also the head of neuroradiology at Stanford University Medical School:
1. Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers. Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Prostate cancer mortality is 604 percent higher in the United Kingdom and 457 percent higher in Norway. The mortality rate for colorectal cancer among British men and women is about 40 percent higher.
2. Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians. Breast cancer mortality in Canada is 9 percent higher than in the United States, prostate cancer is 184 percent higher, and colon cancer among men is about 10 percent higher.
3. Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries. Some 56 percent of Americans who could benefit from statin drugs, which reduce cholesterol and protect against heart disease, are taking them. By comparison, of those patients who could benefit from these drugs, only 36 percent of the Dutch, 29 percent of the Swiss, 26 percent of Germans, 23 percent of Britons, and 17 percent of Italians receive them.
4. Americans have better access to preventive cancer screening than Canadians. Take the proportion of the appropriate-age population groups who have received recommended tests for breast, cervical, prostate, and colon cancer:
Nine out of ten middle-aged American women (89 percent) have had a mammogram, compared to fewer than three-fourths of Canadians (72 percent).
Nearly all American women (96 percent) have had a Pap smear, compared to fewer than 90 percent of Canadians.
More than half of American men (54 percent) have had a prostatespecific antigen (PSA) test, compared to fewer than one in six Canadians (16 percent).
Nearly one-third of Americans (30 percent) have had a colonoscopy, compared with fewer than one in twenty Canadians (5 percent).
5. Lower-income Americans are in better health than comparable Canadians. Twice as many American seniors with below-median incomes self-report “excellent” health (11.7 percent) compared to Canadian seniors (5.8 percent). Conversely, white, young Canadian adults with below-median incomes are 20 percent more likely than lower-income Americans to describe their health as “fair or poor.”
6. Americans spend less time waiting for care than patients in Canada and the United Kingdom. Canadian and British patients wait about twice as long—sometimes more than a year—to see a specialist, have elective surgery such as hip replacements, or get radiation treatment for cancer. All told, 827,429 people are waiting for some type of procedure in Canada. In Britain, nearly 1.8 million people are waiting for a hospital admission or outpatient treatment.
7. People in countries with more government control of health care are highly dissatisfied and believe reform is needed. More than 70 percent of German, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and British adults say their health system needs either “fundamental change” or “complete rebuilding.”
8. Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians. When asked about their own health care instead of the “health care system,” more than half of Americans (51.3 percent) are very satisfied with their health care services, compared with only 41.5 percent of Canadians; a lower proportion of Americans are dissatisfied (6.8 percent) than Canadians (8.5 percent).
9. Americans have better access to important new technologies such as medical imaging than do patients in Canada or Britain. An overwhelming majority of leading American physicians identify computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the most important medical innovations for improving patient care during the previous decade—even as economists and policy makers unfamiliar with actual medical practice decry these techniques as wasteful. The United States has thirty-four CT scanners per million Americans, compared to twelve in Canada and eight in Britain. The United States has almost twenty-seven MRI machines per million people compared to about six per million in Canada and Britain.
10. Americans are responsible for the vast majority of all health care innovations. The top five U.S. hospitals conduct more clinical trials than all the hospitals in any other developed country. Since the mid- 1970s, the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology has gone to U.S. residents more often than recipients from all other countries combined. In only five of the past thirty-four years did a scientist living in the United States not win or share in the prize. Most important recent medical innovations were developed in the United States.

I am doing a detox diet that consists of limiting some foods, lemon water, detoxifying tea once daily and a colon detox pill each day. How long should I do this diet?
This is my first time to do a detox diet and I have been doing it for three days so far. I’m used to eating pretty healthy and organic, so my only side effects have been a little bit of an acne outbreak and my breath is a little more foul in the mornings than it usually is.
Also, what should I do after I have cleansed the colon? Is it okay to start doing the detox baths at that point or should I take a rest?
I weigh 138lbs and im trying to cut down a few pounds. I was wondering if this pill could possibly harm the inside of my body. please help.
I need to lose weight not only in my stomach, but some from my arms and my especially my thighs. Can I stop taking the supplements when I reach my desired weight and not have my body mess up? Should I take just the acai, just the colon cleanse, or both together? Please help with my questions. Thanks!
Will it help me burn and lose fat off the areas I want? Which is better, acai berry or colon cleansing? I’m a little skeptical about colon cleansing though. I don’t want to lose too much weight, but I definately need to lose some and I want to look and feel great. Please help. Thanks!
Basically, im 15 and my doctors think i have IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome). They suggested a new diet to help it. So are there any out there?
I have rectal cancer stage 4, I’ve had chem.and rad. treatment, and now iam breaking out in sores iand iching almost out of control.I have not had any treatment in 11 months.
I just bought it today and was wondering if this will really help?
I have severe bowel movements where I can’t go for like days, almost a week. Does it have side effects? Like if I’m done using it all, will my stomach depend on it?
What if I start eating a lot of fiber like salads and fruits? Will that keep helping me go if I’m done using the cleanser?
My mother had a Gallium scan done and the result was there was an area in her colon that the Dr.’s were really concerned about. The are going to go in and do a colonoscopy. If they have to biopsy anything, about how long would we have to wait for results?
Are there any sure signs that something is wrong?
lost part of mucus plug last week and this week. 0 cm dilated
I was wondering if anybody out there tried it before?
I have done a lot of research on it and most of the websites I came across said it worked but i wanted to know from somebody who used it first hand.
thanks!!
oh and also.. does it make you go to the bathroom alot? like to the point that you wont be able to go along with your normal day? (school, work, etc)
I’ve been having some bothersome symptoms lately. I’m 29 years old. I was just reading about the death of Joel Siegel. He died of colorectal cancer. So as I was reading about it, I found out the symptoms of colorectal cancer & I have actually been having several of these symptoms for some time now. Since the birth of my daughter early this year. Would it be really unlikely that I would have colorectal cancer? Like I said I’m 29 years old. These are the symptoms I’m having:
- chronic constipation
- a little bit of rectal bleeding (this doesn’t happen every day tho)
- pain during and after having a bm
- unexplainable fatigue & feeling of weakness despite me getting a full 8 hours of sleep & sometimes I even get more
Those are the recurring symptoms I’ve been having. Do you think it could be colorectal cancer? I’m hoping it’s just hemorrhoids as I also read from an article on webmd that hemorrhoids can also cause bleeding in the digestive tract & since I had baby not long ago…
by the way here’s the link to the article about colorectal cancer. It contains a list of many of the symptoms caused by having colorectal cancer that I got off of webmd.

I have heard doctors helping colon cleansing thorough some medical treatment / surgery. Do you know any way how to cleanse colon with some natural products?
My mom said it is but I really want to try it I want to show her it’s not
If you have both — let me know you you handle it through the years.
and get the same results?
D) The skin is___ to the bones? E) The radius is ___ to the humerus? F) The esophagus is ___ to the trachea? G) The bladder is ___ to the ascending colon? H) The sternum is ___ to the descending colon?
The answers are Superior, Inferior, Anterior, Posterior, Medial, Lateral, Proximal, Distal, and Deep.
This is for Anatomy.
It seems too good to be true and even though there are offers of free trials, they aren’t free if you don’t return the product within two weeks. And the one that I research charged 90 dollars afterward for each bottle of 30 day supply. It seems like it could be a rip off and it seems expensive. Has anyone actually tried it and does it work?
I had the craziest, weirdest, disturbing dream ever a couple nights ago. i had a dream that my mom told me that i need to clean out my closet, and she came in my room and helped me, but when she cleaned out my closet, she cleaned out my intestines. Nothing happened to me. i didn’t die or didn’t feel anything, however it was a weird feeling that i had. Like i had a big empty hole inside me. Then she did the same thing to herself and my dad. Then she cooked them up and ate them. This happened twice in my dream. The dream ended when i told her that i was tired of eating them because they tasted weird and she agreed. That was it. Does it mean something bad??
Should my bowel elimination be daily or only when I need it.Btw this is purely for weight lose purposes.
Dear reader i’m just posting for some advice,my husband has prostatitis and the doctor prescribed him 100mg doxycycline twice a day,

I have worked in the GI feild for several years and i am aware of the basic symptoms of colon cancer. Recently (as in the past 2 or 3 days or so) my mom’s health has taken a 180 turn. Vomiting, nasua, black watery stools, weakness, etc…with no fever….the first thing that comes into my mind is signs of colon cancer…maybe its just me being paranoid but we have a bad history in our family of this and she also has had ibs in the past (which increases your risks) she has had a colonoscpoy in the past and everything was good….shes now due for one…i reffered her to one of my old drs i used to work for..but..i want to know if you or anyone u know personally with colon cancer had any symptoms prior to a colonscopy and detecting the cancer? and what made you think you may have colon ca?
